The Last Swaddie: Malaya: The Last Stand of a Forgotten Soldier. Out today.
The 1942 Malaya Desk
For the past six months, we have been working quietly behind the scenes on a project that is very close to our hearts. We have been acting as historical research partners for a novelist named D. Sinclair.
Today, we are absolutely thrilled to announce that the result of that collaboration is finally here.
The Last Swaddie: Malaya: The last Stand of a Forgotten Soldier is now available.
The Story Behind the Story
When D. Sinclair first approached us, he had a simple request: he wanted to write a novel about the Malayan Campaign, and he wanted to make sure he got it right. He wasn't interested in writing a fantasy version of the war. He wanted to honor the real men who fought, bled, and died in the rubber plantations and dense jungles of Malaya.
Specifically, he was drawn to the story of the 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
History remembers the fall of Singapore as the greatest defeat in British military history. 130,000 men surrendered in seventy days. It is a story of catastrophe. But within that catastrophe is a story of absolute defiance. While the rest of the British Army was collapsing, the Argylls—under the eccentric and brilliant Lt. Col. Ian Stewart—were fighting back. They trained for the jungle when no one else did. They ambushed the Japanese at Grik Road, inflicting massive casualties. The Japanese called them the Jungle Beasts.
But the book doesn't just focus on the battalion. It focuses on one man.
Enter the White Ghost ( Hantu Putih)
The novel follows Corporal Duncan MacLachlan. When the British surrender comes, Duncan does not lay down his arms. He fades into the jungle. He becomes a myth. The villagers call him Hantu Putih. The Japanese call him a devil. He becomes the White Ghost—a man who kills without pleasure, striking from the shadows and vanishing before the Japanese can catch him.
But he is not just fighting a war. He is keeping a promise. He is fighting for a woman named Mei, and for a small schoolhouse with four walls and six windows.
Over the course of our research together, we fact-checked the weapons (the Vickers guns, the Lee-Enfields, the parangs). We verified the tactics (the ambushes, the Tiger Patrols). We cross-referenced the geography and the timeline. And we also helped navigate the darker, more difficult history of the Malayan Campaign, including the horror of the Sook Ching massacres, which the novel treats with the solemn respect it deserves.
We read early drafts of The Last Swaddie, and we can tell you this: it is a remarkable read. It is a thriller, a tragedy, and a love story all at once. It brings a forgotten chapter of our history screaming back to life.
Early Reader Reactions
We shared early copies of the manuscript with historians, military enthusiasts, and beta readers. Here is what they are saying:
"I've read a lot of WW2 fiction, but I knew nothing about the Argylls in Malaya until this book. The jungle feels alive, the tension is unbearable, and Duncan MacLachlan is a protagonist you won't forget."
